Now here's where I get to have some fun! Hi minna, I'm Azurite, also known as Andi or Andromida on the list. In AIM Chats, I go by Meriellen5. I'm the holiday administrator. Whether you're new to the list or simply want to check up on the calendar, this is the place to check when you want to ready your inbox for a FLOOD of fun emails!
So here's how it works: we have holidays every few months or so, sometimes one right after another. the dates of these holidays normally depend on that year, but there are some that fall strictly on a given day. holidays are announced about a week before they start, and once they finish, they're finished-- right on the hour.
Now, even though *I'm* on the West Coast of the USA, holidays are always scheduled to end at 12:00AM Eastern Standard/Daylight Time. If you do not live on the West Coast or the East Coast, then convert your clocks properly-- the holiday doesn't end at 12:00 PST, or 12:00 Australian time. ^^ This makes our life much easier if you remember this.
Lastly, holidays may have special rules for them. That means that only certain people can post on a certain day, or only certain types of fics should be sent to the list. To prevent confusion, ALWAYS TAG YOUR HOLIDAY ENTRIES. That means type this in the "subject" line of your emails:
[Holiday Name] [The Name/Title of your Entry, Part # by Your Name Here]
It's also recommended to include ratings, especially for fics that are PG13 or higher. So, without further adieu, THE HOLIDAYS!

4th: SMRFF Anniversary: The SMRFF was born one cold winter's day in 1999. So for the entire month of January, the list celebrates and has a birthday bash! We send fics, we send fanart, we create polls, add music... it's the month of SMRFF-dom!
19th: EMSiT Day:
(Evil Mad Scientists in Training Day) introduced by the EMS (Meredith
Bronwen Mallory) herself, this day allows for the EMSiTs to write cliffhangers
to their heart's content (and soak in all the screaming
"you-can't-do-that-to-us!" feedback).
February -
14th: WAFF DAY: Valentine's Day is the most romantic holiday of the year. So why not dedicate it to fans and writers of WAFF (Warm and Fuzzy Feeling) fanfiction? For the entire day, it's WAFFy day! So show your WAFFly colors, raise the WAFFle banner, and feel FUZZY inside!
March - NO HOLIDAYS!
April -
7th: WAFF vs. TAFF DAY: Think you're WAFFy? Do you dare you call yourself TAFFy? If you think you've mastered the art of Warm and Fuzzy Feelings -- or the equally difficult Twisted and Fuzzy Feelings, then jump right in the battle of all battles! WAFFles versus TAFFers, with the smattering of Fencers inbetween! It's Romance! It's Angst! It's fun to read, vote, and win!
May - NO HOLIDAYS!
June -
The week of the 30th: Usa Week: Dedicated to the star of "Sailormoon" -- who else, Tsukino Usagi (Serena for all you dubbies out there)! We celebrate the Odango, the Usako, the everything-about-Usa in one fun filled week! Awards are given for fanfiction and fanart.
July - NO HOLIDAYS!
August -
The week of the 3rd (may include days in July): Mamo Week: He's tall. He's dark. He's handsome-- and he runs around saving mini-skirted girls from certain death! Why, he's Chiba Mamoru! Dubbies call him Darien, fangirls calls him Tuxedo Kamen-sama, and his reincarnation is oft called Endymion. This stud is the focus of an entire week's worth of fanfiction and fanart! Awards are given!
September - NO HOLIDAYS!
October -
31st: TAFF Day: Why should the WAFFles have all the fun? On the day traditionally celebrated as Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve around the world, the TAFFers rule. For an entire day, it's nothing but torrid angst, dark, yet haunting stories lightly sprinkled with romance. Better than any candy you'll get! Celebrate TAFF day with us... if you dare.
November -
December - Tis the season to be jolly! Regardless of what you celebrate, December is the season of loving, sharing, and of course GIFT-GIVING! So SMRFFers give each other great presents by writing a bunch of holiday/winter stories! Get in the season by writing a cheery fic-- or do the opposite with a Bah Humbug! Awards are given for fanfiction and fanart.
So what's all this jabber about AWARDS? Yep, we have exclusive awards given out only on certain holidays. So here are the standard lists of awards and how they work:
Best WAFF - The fic
that's SO Warm and Fuzzy, it really expresses what that feeling is all about.
Best TAFF - The fic that keeps in tone with the harsh reality of life,
but adding a bit of fluff every now and then.
Best Comedy - HAHAHAHAHAHAH! That was SO funny! Can't ... stop ...
laughing! Here... take the award already!
Best Oneshot - A one-part fic never before released that has a great
sense of originality and creativity.*
Best New Fic - A multi-part fanfiction started on a holiday, and possibly
continued in later (holiday) posts.
Best New Chapter - The latest installment of a story already begun, but
fresh with an engaging plot!
Best Darkfic - The fic that haunts you with its chilling plot, compelling
and often realistic characters.
Best Kiss - The fic that has that kiss that makes you sigh and wish YOU
were on the receiving end!
Best Cliffhanger - NOOOOOOO! You can't do that! What happens NEXT!? TELLL
MEEEE!!!
Best Artwork - Artwork that is just stunning in its originality, style,
medium, and portrayal of a character.
Best Overall - The fanfiction that wins the battle when it's pitted
against other category winners.
* This award may be/has been combined with the 'Best New Fic' award.
We have recently decided to remove the November holiday 'New Lights Week,' which focused on new writers. In past years, this holiday hasn't gotten a lot of participation, so we have retired it.
NOTE: We actually have an SMRFF Events ML, which encapsulates all the holiday technicalities. The list isn't really in use, since it only has 10 members, but if we ever need to use it, we'll announce it on the main SMRFF list.
